Lionel was never going to be seen

In the beginning, I planned to have Lionel as a character that was talked about and reacted to, but not have him actually appear. I thought I would make him this figure of fear that existed in the background, but never actually let anyone see him. I wanted to spark people’s imaginations about what an abusive father looked and sounded like, so that perhaps the story would be even more personal to them.

But I decided to scrap this idea eventually. Not only were the narrative possibilities of an off-screen character very limiting, it also prevented me from fleshing out the presence of Lennan’s father into a complete person – in other words, I couldn’t humanise him. Thirdly, I realised that Lionel would leave more of an impact on people if he were seen AND heard.

So here he is today!
